In Malaga in few days will be held a solemn presentation of the Carmen Thyssen museum, which even before the opening is called one of the most interesting and vibrant exhibitions of painting in Andalusia.
The baroness of Thyssen-Bornemis is a cult figure for connoisseurs of Spanish painting and art. She owns one of the most extensive collections of paintings and sculptures of prominent artists in the world. It is not surprising that the opening of a new museum in Malaga, where there will be some 200 paintings from her collection, is considered to be one of the major events in the cultural life of Andalusia.
The total cost of works, which will be exhibited in the gallery, is estimated at 700 million euros. Collection for the museum the baroness leased until 2025. At a press conference held in Malaga on Wednesday, the owner of the collection indicated that the lease may be extended.
Anyway, the Carmen Thyssen museum attracts visitors not so much by the name of the collector or the amount of items, but with the names of artists, whose works will be exhibited in the halls of the gallery.
The main part of the works is dated by the 19th century. Among them are paintings of Spanish classics Joaquin Sorolla, Regojos and Aureliano Beruet.
Carmen Thyssen Museum will be opened in Malaga on Friday, March 25, 2011. It will be located in the halls of the old Villalon palace of the 16th century. Two weeks after its opening the museum will receive its first thematic exhibition - "From Picasso to Tapies".
The baroness of Thyssen-Bornemis is the widow of the Dutch-born industrialist Hans Heinrich von Thyssen-Bornemis. He owns the laurels of the main collector. In 1993 he sold about 700 works from the collection to the Spanish government. Today the first museum of Thyssen-Bornemis in Madrid is one of the most important collections of paintings in the Spanish capital, along with the Prado gallery.
