According to the resolution of the Ministry for the Environment, all Spanish beach restaurants have to disappear from the shore. All snack cafés, so called chiringuito restaurants, have to correspond to the new requirements. The area of restaurants mustn’t exceed 150 square meters, they have to be situated not on the sand, and the distance between adjacent restaurants is allowed to be no less than 200 meters. Such rigorous criterions were carried to representatives of restaurant business by Juan Carlos Martín Fragueiro, the Secretary General for the Sea, on the meeting in Malaga on Monday 23 March.
Undoubtedly, the new requirements have met a protest from the restaurant owners, the Governing Body of Andalusia and Malaga socialists. All they consider that this law will have strong influence on the tourism industry of Andalusia. However, Fragueiro said that the new law would possibly be slightly slackened but not very.
In compliance with the latest information, there are more than 800 chiringuito restaurants on the shore of Andalusia. Almost 50 per cent of them are on the popular resort area Costa del Sol. A maintenance staff of Andalusian beach restaurants is constituted by about 40 thousand people.
