Fernán Pérez: Traditions, Farmsteads and Nature in Cabo de Gata-Níjar

Fernán Pérez between the Natural Park and Rural Architectural Heritage

Fernán Pérez is a village located inland within Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The village can be reached from Campohermoso via the AL-3106 provincial road. Outside Fernán Pérez lies El Molino de Fernán Pérez, a group of farmsteads typical of the Níjar district. Visitors to the village will therefore find, alongside the landscape, a named point of reference for the district’s traditional rural architecture.

Windmill and Aqueduct as Historical Testaments

The windmill in the settlement of Fernán Pérez was restored and structurally secured by the Government of Andalusia. Another prominent structure is the Fernán Pérez Aqueduct. It lies northwest of the village centre, was built at the beginning of the previous century and spans the hollow of the Barranco de la Cueva. Its purpose was to convey water from a mine at Cortijo Expósito, located in the Sierra de Cabo de Gata, to the cultivated fields. The aqueduct was therefore built to transport water from this mine.

A Walk through the Village

A short walk through Fernán Pérez is recommended to observe its traditional architecture and structural details. The village’s traditional features include small white houses and a church. The communal washhouse on the Camino del Sarmiento is also one of the specific stops: it has eight washbasins and a livestock trough. Níjar Town Hall restored the washhouse in 2003 in order to restore it as a characteristic ethnographic element of the district. The Fernán Pérez washhouse and its surroundings are described as a tourist attraction.

Farmsteads, Paths and Observation in the Surrounding Area

You can park the car in Fernán Pérez to visit the washhouse and the village. A signposted turnoff from the route leads along an unpaved road to Cortijada del Higo Seco. This road is unsuitable for vehicles with low ground clearance. Cortijada del Higo Seco consists of a group of farmsteads with cisterns and wells, as well as numerous prickly pear cacti and agaves. The various architectural and plant details provide several specific points of interest during a walk.

Festivals, Traditions and Steppe Landscape

Fernán Pérez’s patron saint festivities take place at the end of May in honour of San Fernando. In addition, the old tradition of sounding the matraca in the streets and surrounding farmsteads at the beginning of the religious celebrations during Holy Week has been revived in Fernán Pérez. This tradition had not been practised for more than 30 years. Another focus is the steppe areas around Fernán Pérez, where particularly high levels of biodiversity and species rarity have been recorded.
