Fiñana: Alcazaba, Mosque and Sendero 21

The Alcazaba of Fiñana was built before the 10th century; the remains of three towers and surrounding walls have survived.

Culture and history

Its heyday was in the 13th and 15th centuries, and the Alcazaba was occupied by the Christians in 1489. The neighbourhood that grew out of the Alcazaba of Fiñana preserves traces of the former Muslim suburb along its streets.

The Ermita de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno preserves an almost completely intact 13th-century Almohad mosque. The prayer hall with its qibla and part of the decoration on the mihrab portal have survived; only the minaret and courtyard are missing. In 1984, the mosque was declared a historical and artistic monument.

The Iglesia de la Anunciación de Fiñana was built in 1570; its interior is Mudejar, while the façade is designed in the Renaissance style. In its sacristy, the church houses a museum with religious works and scores of Gregorian chants.

The Centro de Interpretación del Medio Natural (CIMENA) in Fiñana offers self-guided visits as well as guided tours on request. Its visitor facilities include the Museo de la Recreación de los Reyes Católicos.

Festivals in Fiñana

The Feast of Corpus Christi is considered one of the town's most important festive rituals. During the Corpus Christi procession, streets and façades along the procession route are decorated with blankets hanging from the balconies. The residents of Fiñana set up their Corpus Christi altars at the doors of their homes.

Nature and trails

Fiñana is one of the municipalities in the province of Almería included in the Espacio Natural de Sierra Nevada.

Sendero 21 begins at the Albergue de Ubeire, located about 13 km from Fiñana. The trail follows the Arroyo del Ubeire through a riparian forest of willows, alders, walnut trees and some chestnut trees, leading to the Cascada del Goterón at the confluence of the Ubeire, Estepar and Rosal streams. Using traditional pack-animal trails, Sendero 21 provides access to the grain mills located on the Río Nacimiento, which have overshot water wheels.

There are two access routes from Fiñana to Sendero Sulayr: one by vehicle and one on foot. The vehicle access road leads to the route of Sendero Sulayr on the Piedra Negra–El Toril section. The pedestrian route leads from the Albergue de Ubeire via the perimeter track to Loma del Rosal.

The Albergue-Refugio El Ubeire is located about 14 km from Fiñana, is accessible via a forest track and is managed by the Fiñana Town Council.
