La Isleta del Moro: Fishing Tradition, Coastal Views and S07 Hiking Trail

La Isleta del Moro has a natural anchorage that residents still use today. The fishing tradition is present throughout the village. The traditional fishing technique known as “moruna” is still practised, although it is connected with tourism.

At the same time, the fishing tradition is not limited to individual events: it is present throughout the village, while “moruna” is specifically passed down as a technique that is still practised. Its connection with tourism forms part of its present-day character.

In summer, a procession in honour of the Virgen del Carmen travels through La Isleta Bay on a fishing boat. Residents and visitors accompany it on land and on the water. The traditional festivities in honour of San Agustín in La Isleta del Moro were revived in 2016; they include a cultural week. Thus, over the course of the year, both the procession on the water and the revived celebrations with their cultural programme represent the local festive tradition.

Nature

From the Mirador de la Isleta del Moro, visitors can see both the coastal village and the islet that gives it its name. This viewpoint also offers views of underwater Posidonia meadows, which appear as dark stripes in the clear sea. The panorama therefore combines the visible coastal development with a feature of the underwater landscape.

There are 25 parking spaces at the Mirador de la Isleta del Moro. Further parking is available in the village; from there, the viewpoint can be reached on foot. The viewpoint can therefore be accessed either directly, with a parking space on site, or via the footpath from the village.

In the vicinity of La Isleta del Moro, Playa del Peñón Blanco can be reached via the ALP-326. Parking spaces for vehicles are available at the beach. Playa del Peñón Blanco has volcanically shaped topography that is of interest to geology enthusiasts. The coastal landscape there therefore includes not only the beach itself but also the geologically shaped terrain.

Hiking

The Escullos–Isleta del Moro hiking trail is a linear route. As the S07 coastal hiking trail, it runs between Los Escullos and La Isleta del Moro. These two named locations therefore mark the route’s connection along the coast.

Along this coastal hiking trail, one section features a fan-shaped geological structure created by the erosion of the surrounding mountains. Significant marine formations are visible from the S07 hiking trail. They are important for life in the Mediterranean and act as carbon sinks.

Further direct destinations include El Pozo De Los Frailes, Rodalquilar, Las Negras, Los Albaricoques and San Jose-Nijar.
