Public Spaces and Outdoor Activities
Santa María del Águila brings together public spaces, outdoor activities and local traditions in a clear thematic range. The Parque Municipal, Día de la Bicicleta, Aljibe El Boque and Encuentro de Trilla represent different ways of experiencing the town: in everyday life, actively along the route or through cultural customs. This provides several specific starting points for planning a stay.
As a public point of reference, the Biblioteca Pública Municipal „Santa María del Águila“ de El Ejido is open. From September to June, its winter opening hours are Monday to Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This regular weekly schedule can help with planning the day if a library visit is combined with other activities in the town.
The Parque Municipal of Santa María del Águila provides a place for outdoor activities in the town. It covers 25,771.80 m² and has children's play areas, freely accessible sports facilities, a calisthenics area, a fitness zone, a petanque court and plenty of space for walking. During a stay, its size and different areas can be planned as clearly separate activities.
Cycling Route and Traditional Customs
The traditional Día de la Bicicleta in Santa María del Águila also has its own special focus. The event includes an approximately eight-kilometre route through central streets and along the cycle path to the „La Redonda“ Industrial Park. The approximate route length provides a specific reference point for planning personal stages.
A specific cultural and local landmark is the Aljibe El Boque. It is located on the Camino Viejo de Roquetas in Santa María del Águila and was restored in 2009. The Encuentro de Trilla in Santa María del Águila offers another way of experiencing traditional working customs: in 2023, it celebrated its tenth anniversary and revived traditional threshing practices. At the Encuentro de Trilla held in Santa María del Águila in 2023, a dozen mule drivers threshed with their animals. The aljibe and the Encuentro thus offer two different perspectives for those interested in culture.
Festivals and Horse-Riding Activities
At the patron-saint festivals of Santa María del Águila, the dish „Huevos Fritos con chorizo“ is traditionally prepared. It is made using products grown in the greenhouses of El Ejido. Anyone wishing to consider festival traditions and food culture together will find this dish to be a clearly identified part of the local festivities.
The activity programme includes the „Pasión a Caballo“ horse show. Other activities on offer include horseback rides in the mountains and on the beach of the Paraje Punta Entinas Sabinar for groups and families. In El Ejido, horse-riding lessons are offered for all age groups, as well as various forms of dressage. The horse-riding options mentioned therefore range from the horse show and trail rides to lessons and forms of dressage.
Other places for orientation in Andalusia include Líjar, La Envía, El Hijate, Agua Amarga, El Contador, Los Navarros, Vera and Los Cerricos.
