Turre: Sierra Cabrera, Culture and Nature

Turre combines the mountain landscape of the Sierra Cabrera with fertile agricultural fields and lies along the course of the Aguas River. The area brings together diverse landscapes, historic sites and specific routes through the municipality.

Other places in the regional selection include Antas, Macael, Garrucha, Vélez-Rubio, Huesa, Pechina, Taberno and Adra.

Nature

The PR-A 370 Turre–El Jalí hiking trail leads into the heart of the Sierra Cabrera. Along this route, dwarf fan palms, esparto grass and aromatic plants such as purple thyme and curled lavender grow. In the rural surroundings of Turre, you can hike on nearby trails and visit places such as the Paraje de Yesos in the Umbría de Sierra Cabrera.

The La Limera-Murtal recreational area is located in a wooded part of the Sierra Cabrera within the municipality of Turre. It belongs to the Sierra de Cabrera-Bédar Special Conservation Area. The site includes tables, barbecue facilities, a spring and a large car park.

The main access to the La Limera-Murtal recreational area is via the A-7, the exit for Los Giles and the AL-6110 road. From there, an ascending forest track continues into the area.

Culture and History

Gatas in Turre has seven settlement phases. These range from the first Chalcolithic settlement to an Andalusian settlement. The Argaric and post-Argaric settlements of Gatas also comprise ten construction phases from the Bronze Age.

The Cueva de la Palmera and the Cueva de los Murciélagos in Turre contain remains from the Upper Paleolithic, the Neolithic and other prehistoric periods.

The rebuilt Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima was designed by the provincial architect Martín Baldó. The church was completed in 1888. Its interior has three naves with barrel vaults; the side aisles are lower than the central nave.

The Fuente Morisca, also known as Fuente de Turre, has been mentioned in documents since 1495. The historic Fuente Morisca has five outlets and a basin. It includes channels for clean and wastewater, a watering trough and a washing area. The Fuente Morisca is associated with traditional experiences of washing clothes, bathing, secret meetings and children's games.

Gastronomy

Turre hosts the Jornadas Gastronómicas de Cocina de Matanza de Sierra Cabrera. The event serves to promote the municipality's cuisine and raise awareness of its natural heritage.

Golf and Cycling Route

The Club de Golf Cortijo Grande is located within the municipality of Turre at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera. The Cortijo Grande golf course is predominantly flat and has nine holes. It is planted with lemon, orange and olive trees.

The Ruta MTB organized by the Asociación Cultural y Deportiva Bomberos del Levante Almeriense has reached its fourteenth edition. The Ruta MTB Bomberos del Levante covers a total of 40 kilometers and follows trails within the municipality of Turre.
