Villarrubia: Culture, Library and Historical Heritage
Cultural Events and Historical Points of Reference
In Villarrubia, festive traditions and historic sites come together. The Feria de Villarrubia is celebrated in mid-July in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. The Nuestra Señora del Carmen church is also part of Villarrubia’s historical cultural heritage.
Biblioteca Villarrubia
The Biblioteca Villarrubia offers a children’s and young people’s library, computers with internet access, a reference section, a newspaper collection, and a music and film section. Its wide-ranging offering brings together different media areas in one place, ranging from printed newspapers to music and film. Through the Biblioteca Villarrubia, borrowable media from other libraries in Córdoba’s municipal library network can also be requested.
For orientation in the locality, the library thus serves as a cultural point of reference in its own right, alongside the historic buildings and the events mentioned above.
Madinat al-Zahra and the History of al-Andalus
The remains of Madinat al-Zahra, the “Shining City”, can be seen from Villarrubia. The site was built on the orders of Abd al-Rahman III, the first caliph of al-Andalus, and is designated a World Heritage Site. The view from Villarrubia thus connects the present-day locality with an important historic site whose name and origins are closely linked to the history of al-Andalus.
Villarrubia’s Historical Heritage
The Cortijo de los Frailes Jerónimos is considered the most important building in Villarrubia’s historical cultural heritage. At the same time, the Cortijo de los Frailes Jerónimos formed part of the rural heritage of the nearby San Jerónimo de Valparaíso monastery. The Cortijo Los Frailes is listed in the “Cortijos and Country Estates” category. The two names thus preserve different historical and catalogue references: one to the cultural heritage and the monastery, and the other to the designated category.
Plaza de la Iglesia as a Starting Point
For a municipal cultural walk to Las Ermitas, the Plaza de la Iglesia in Villarrubia was scheduled as the starting point in 2026. The starting point for the hike on the Camino Viejo de Santo Domingo, announced on 22 March 2026, was also at the Plaza de la Iglesia de Villarrubia. The different formats also illustrate two ways of engaging with the area’s cultural and landscape references: as a cultural walk and as a hike.
Fiesta de la Primavera
At the Fiesta de la Primavera in Villarrubia on 20 April 2024, various workshops, demonstrations and live music were scheduled from 12 noon onwards. The festival programme therefore featured several types of events taking place from midday. The Feria de Villarrubia and the Fiesta de la Primavera are two different festivals with their own dates and programmes.
Villarrubia de Córdoba Railway Station
At Villarrubia de Córdoba railway station, RF-Proximidad services to Córdoba Julio Anguita and Palma del Río are listed. The station therefore indicates two specific travel directions that are relevant to locating Villarrubia in relation to Córdoba and Palma del Río.
