Alhama de Granada between Gorges, Culture and Thermal Waters

Alhama de Granada combines a striking rocky landscape with historical traces and Andalusian festivals. The Tajos de Alhama Natural Monument is a mixed protected landscape in Alhama de Granada. Gorges, Woodlands and Various Routes

Visits to the Tajos de Alhama Natural Monument are possible via signposted paths or marked routes. Several different trails are available for active exploration: the 6 km Camino Medieval de los Ángeles / Humedal de la Pantaneta route connects historic viewpoints, the riverside surroundings, sections of the GR7-E4 and a wetland where you can observe waterfowl. The 13.5 km Los Crestones del Cañón de los Tajos route runs along the eastern and western slopes of the canyon and includes sections of the GR-7.

The 17 km route to the Quejigo de Júrtiga offers further landscape impressions. It passes through Mediterranean woodland and reaches the old, particularly large Quejigo de Júrtiga oak. The 17.6 km Alhama de Granada–Los Llanos–Los Morales route combines historical heritage, traditional paths and natural landscapes. The different trail lengths help you compare excursions according to the desired scope and plan your days around nature observation, landscapes and physical activity.

Church and Local History

Alhama's cultural heritage includes the Iglesia Mayor de Santa María de la Encarnación. The church dates from the 16th century and was built on the site of the former main mosque by order of the Catholic Monarchs. It also houses a church museum with liturgical vestments and sacred furnishings from the 15th and 16th centuries. The former prison complex of Alhama de Granada was built in 1674. At the Centro de Interpretación Alhama de Granada, or CIAG for short, local history and culture are presented using multimedia and 3D in six thematic rooms.

Festivals, Wine and Regional Cuisine

The events calendar brings local traditions to the town. Candelaria is celebrated on 2 February with bonfires, traditional Meceores, traditional verses, food and wine from the region. The Fiesta del Vino takes place every February and includes a tasting of locally produced wine as well as typical dishes such as olla jameña, choto, migas, cheese and cured meats. The Carnival of Alhama and Domingo de Piñata are considered events of Andalusian tourist interest; they include Murgas, Comparsas and popular verses.

Thermal Waters and Getting There

The thermal pools of Alhama de Granada are considered natural thermal pools with water at approximately 47°C throughout the year. From Granada, you can reach Alhama de Granada via the A-92 and then the A-402. Alternative access routes lead via the A-338 or the A-335.
