Las Infantas between River Landscape and History

Las Infantas combines a distinctive river landscape with a multi-layered history and various opportunities for discovery. The Pago de Las Infantas area includes the floodplains of the Guadalbullón River as well as higher-lying areas with gentle rises in the terrain. River deposits and runoff processes have shaped this landscape. The riverside plots along the Guadalbullón are used for growing vegetables and cotton, as well as for young olive groves. Las Infantas is therefore not only a place, but also a landscape whose agricultural use is closely connected with the river area.

The name Las Infantas also reaches far back into history. It is associated with the siege of Jaén by Fernando III in 1245, when Fernando III housed his daughters there. A cortijo has been documented in Las Infantas since 1378. In 1410, the place appears as Dehesa del Cortijo de Las Infantas. These historical names give the destination a particular sense of historical depth, without requiring a large urban setting.

Culture, Local Life and Distinctive Traces

A specific point of interest in the area is the Biblioteca Pública Municipal “Las Infantas” at Avenida Infanta Elena s/n. Local cultural life also includes traditional festivals in honour of San Isidro Labrador. This festival programme includes a Mass and a traditional procession with Cabezudos. A celebration on 8 February featuring performances by several groups, as well as a separate celebration on 15 February, have also been announced for Las Infantas. The two carnival dates should therefore be understood as announced programme items.

Another trace of the past is a disused former factory in the Las Infantas area. It was associated with iron oxide used in the manufacture of paints. The buildings are described as reddish; their colour is linked to this connection with iron oxide.

Excursions with an Airfield and Play Area

Introductory flights are offered at Aeródromo de las Infantas. The aerodrome is located next to the Las Infantas settlement centre. Annual scoring competitions for the Liga FAE, the Andalusian Championship and the Championship of the City of Jaén, Air Xauen, take place there. The airfield thus brings an unusual, active aspect to the landscape around the area.

Families can use a certified children's play area on Plaza Infanta Cristina. It is open and approved for use.
