Culture in the Heart of the City

In the heart of Seville, the cathedral, the Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias form a remarkable monumental complex. If you look at the cathedral in terms of its design, you will find five naves; at the same time, it is the largest Gothic building in Europe. The Giralda is a masterpiece of Almohad architecture. The Archivo de Indias contains valuable documents from the archives of the colonies in the Americas and, as a building, is one of the clearest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture. The original core of the Alcázar was built in the 10th century as the palace of the Muslim governor, while the Alcázar is still used today as the residence of the Spanish royal family in Seville.

Museums and Squares

Plaza de América was designed by Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. Seville's Museum of Arts and Popular Customs is located in Parque de María Luisa within Plaza de América and has one of the most comprehensive collections of Andalusian folk ceramics in Europe. Seville's Archaeological Museum provides an overview of history from the Paleolithic to the Roman period and displays, among other things, important pieces from Itálica as well as valuable mosaics. Seville's Museum of Fine Arts houses works from the 13th to the 20th century, including a particularly valuable collection of Sevillian Baroque painting. Its program includes cultural activities, temporary exhibitions, educational workshops and inclusive offerings for all visitor groups. The museum collections thus range from archaeological artifacts and mosaics to ceramics and paintings, while the temporary exhibitions and workshops complement the program of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Flamenco and Exploring the City

Flamenco performances can be experienced daily in Seville at the well-known tablaos, in neighborhood peñas, at themed venues and in certain bars. Parque de María Luisa can be explored on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn carriage. Themed routes make it possible to explore Seville's streets, squares and historic corners shaped by art and culture.

Getting There

From Seville Airport, the city center can be reached by private or rental car and by taxi in approximately 15 minutes, and by bus in approximately 35 minutes. Santa Justa railway station is currently accessible by AVE high-speed trains from Córdoba, Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, as well as by AVANT trains from Málaga.
