On February 15, 2011 in the capital of Tenerife (the largest island of the Canary archipelago) - Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will be started a grand cultural event - Canary Islands Carnival. To date, the Carnival is the biggest and brightest carnival in Europe and worldwide it is second only after the famous Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Hundreds of thousands of tourists annually come to Tenerife in the period from early February to late March. And although the hotel business and the infrastructure are well developed on the island, booking of rooms in hotels should be made at least in a month.
According to the tradition, celebration will begin with a gala performance, where will be elected the Queen of Carnival. This is a very honorable and prestigious role, but at the same time and very hard, because throughout all three weeks of the holiday all the main events will be held with the direct participation of the Queen.
The most important spectacular and massive event of the Carnival is the Grand Parade, which begins on Tuesday of the oil week and lasts for 24 hours. In this many hour costumed parade, which is accompanied by fireworks and musical performances, participate a lot of people. Canary Carnival was even listed in the “Guinness Book of Records”, when 240.000 people all the night were dancing in the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The Carnival ends with an event that is called "The Funeral of a Sardine". On this day on the streets of the city is carried huge stuffed fish, made of papier-mache, which symbolizes the spirit of the past holiday, and in the evening, under the loud lament of disguised in women's clothes men this scarecrow is burnt.
Tenerife is often referred to as "the Island of Eternal Spring" (Isla de la Eterna Primavera), and it deserves such title, because all the year round on the island prevails mild pleasant weather and temperature of 20°-22°C in winter and 26°-28°C in summer.
Accommodation options for the time of the Carnival can be found on the portal cottages-for-holidays.com: villas on Tenerife, apartments, flats and bungalows for rent online.
