Vera Playa: Beaches, Lagoons and Water Sports

Beaches and Promenades

El Playazo stretches for more than 2 kilometres and is approximately 120 metres wide. Playa Naturista is a natural continuation of El Playazo and is known as Europe’s first naturist enclave.

Las Marinas-Bolaga is an open, spacious urban beach measuring more than 1,350 metres in length and 200 metres in average width. The Paseo Marítimo runs along this beach for 1,775 metres.

Cala Marqués forms the northernmost part of El Playazo and lies in a small bay with pine trees in the background. Playa de Cala Marqués bears the SICTED and Ecoplayas environmental and quality labels. El Playazo has received the Blue Flag, SICTED and Ecoplayas environmental and quality awards.

Natural Environment

Laguna de Puerto Rey is a 2.7-hectare Site of Community Importance. It is also an ecologically valuable wetland habitat at the mouth of the Antas River.

Laguna de Vera is an ecologically valuable habitat for waterfowl and serves, among other things, as a breeding and rearing area for the white-headed duck and marbled duck. It also lies along the migration routes of waterfowl.

Culture and Events

Las Marinas-Bolaga is traditionally also known as Villajarapa. The name is associated with traditional camping stays using jarapas, rugs and tapestries made from twisted strips of fabric, which were common until the 1970s.

Opposite Plaza de la Pérgola stands a chimney from the former San Jacinto smelting works. Numerous cultural and sporting activities take place along the Paseo Marítimo, including concerts, children’s games, theatre and workshops.

“Tus Playas de Invierno” includes yoga by the sea, outdoor workshops and group games. From November to May, the programme offers free beach activities on Saturdays and Sundays without prior registration. “Atardeceres con Encanto” is free of charge and does not require a reservation.

Active by the Sea and in the Surrounding Area

Vera’s ecotourism programme suggests exploring the beaches, which stretch for more than 5 km, and Laguna de Puerto Rey on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

El Playazo offers water sports equipment rental, a sports area and an area for practising surfing. A sailing school has been operating at El Playazo de Vera for more than 10 years and offers weekly courses in windsurfing, kitesurfing, catamaran sailing and Optimist sailing.

AquaVera

AquaVera is located at Avenida Ciudad de Valencia 2B, 04621 Vera-Playa, Almería, Andalusia, Spain. A water ride at AquaVera runs for 380 metres through curves and descents, overcoming a height difference of 12.42 metres.

AquaVera has a water play area for small children with slides, water fountains and ramps.

Public Transport and Beach Facilities

Public transport connects the coast of Vera with the town centre all year round; in summer, it runs more frequently.

Vera’s beaches have lifeguard and water rescue services, medical assistance, police patrols, safety information, beach cleaning and separate waste bins.

Accessible beach facilities include toilets, showers, foot-washing stations, adapted sanitary facilities, amphibious chairs, beach access mats and areas for children.
