Corteconcepción: Nature, Cultural Heritage and Hiking Trails

Corteconcepción is part of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park. The two town centres, Corteconcepción and Puerto Gil, are protected as Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the category “Historic Site”.

Culture and Townscape

The historic town centre of Corteconcepción features a dense layout of irregular blocks of houses and narrow, winding streets adapted to the topography. The Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception is a 16th-century basilica in the Gothic-Mudéjar style with three naves. The Hermitage of San Juan Bautista features a diamond-shaped sebka pattern from the Almohad period on its façade and houses an anonymous polychrome sculpture of the Immaculate Conception dating from the 18th century.

The Plaza de Toros de Concepción is adapted to the terrain and is used during the Fiesta del Camino, as well as for cultural events and sporting activities. The Fiesta del Camino takes place along the Camino connecting the two districts, “Corte” and “Puerto”, and lasts five days, featuring dancing and cultural and sporting activities.

Nature and Hiking Trails

The area around Corteconcepción includes dehesas and hills, forests of holm oaks, cork oaks and chestnut trees, as well as streams that converge in a nearby reservoir. The direct route to the Cascada de los Molinos is approximately 3.8 kilometres long and takes about 60 minutes. The Cascada de los Molinos is the municipality’s recommended hiking trail and offers three options for experiencing nature and observing various animal and plant species.

Pueblo caminero is considered a historic route connecting the nature and cultural heritage of Corteconcepción. The Pueblo caminero hiking trail is an easy route, 3.83 kilometres long, with a duration of 58 minutes. La Fuente del Rey is a historic hiking trail running from Corteconcepción to Aracena and returning to Corteconcepción via the Sierra; it is classified as an easy route, is 10.95 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 123 minutes.

El Rebollar is a hiking trail that starts at the Cuatro Caminos junction and can be walked in two directions. The official Aracena–Corteconcepción route via El Rebollar begins in Corteconcepción at Calle Montesina, is listed as a one-way route measuring 4.715 kilometres, has a low difficulty level and takes approximately two hours. The Mirador La Rejoya viewpoint is directly accessible via the public path connecting El Rebollar with Aracena.

Leisure in the Surrounding Area

The Área Recreativa del Embalse in the municipality of Corteconcepción offers family walks, nature observation and stargazing. There are several picnic areas with tables and benches along the reservoir. The Área Recreativa La Crucecita is located approximately 300 metres from Corteconcepción in the direction of the reservoir and Cañaveral de León, and offers excellent views, a play area, picnic facilities and parking.

The Parque de Agua comprises a lawn area, a water area and a relaxation area, and is intended for children.

Festivals and Regional Specialities

As part of Corteconcepción’s Mosto tradition, local vineyards are traditionally opened around the All Saints’ weekend so that visitors can taste an artisanal beverage. The Jornadas Gastronómicas y Cinegéticas last an entire weekend and conclude with a national ham-carving competition.

The Ruta del Jabugo offers a guided gastronomic tour at the facilities in Corteconcepción, visiting the dehesa and a natural ham-curing facility centred on 100% acorn-fed Iberian ham. It presents a family tradition dating back to centuries past.
