Culture and Local History
The designated historic area of Galaroza is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category Conjunto Histórico. The Ermita de Santa BrÃgida stands on the hill overlooking the village and offers views of the Múrtiga Valley and a wide arc of the surrounding Sierras. The Parroquia de la PurÃsima Concepción is an outstanding 17th-century church with Classicist elements from the late 16th century and a deep presbytery.
The Iglesia del Carmen stands on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian and houses a Neoclassical retable featuring the image of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of Galaroza. The Fuente de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, popularly known as Fuente de los Doce Caños, is an ornamental fountain built in 1889 in the centre of the village, naturally fed by a spring at the foot of Cerro de Santa BrÃgida. In the hamlet of Navahermosa, the design of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario is directly derived from the work of the architect Hernán Ruiz II.
Galaroza's water culture is connected with the Múrtiga River, irrigation channels and the surrounding gardens. The production of chairs with rush-seated surfaces was a long-established tradition in Galaroza, but has declined significantly in recent years. Galaroza has numerous businesses producing furniture, doors, windows and chairs from various types of wood, as well as several craftspeople working with stone, wood and leather.
The Centro de Interpretación del Patrimonio Histórico de Galaroza presents the history and culture of Galaroza through photographs, interactive videos and models of the monuments, and displays elements from the municipality's historical heritage as well as its present-day traditions. Visits to the Centro de Interpretación del Patrimonio Histórico de Galaroza can be arranged by telephone on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
