Palos de la Frontera – historical sites and nature
Palos de la Frontera is the most important stop on the Ruta de los Lugares Colombinos.
Culture and history
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Jorge Mártir is a Gothic-Mudéjar building with three Mudéjar naves and a Gothic apse. In 1931, the church was declared a national monument.
In the square of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Jorge Mártir, the Royal Pragmatic Decree was read out in May 1492. It required Palos to hand over two caravels to Christopher Columbus and, at the same time, to recruit local sailors.
The expedition led by Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón brothers departed from the Puerto Histórico de Palos on 3 August 1492. Alongside the church square, the port is therefore another precisely named site associated with the events of 1492.
The names MartÃn Alonso, Vicente Yáñez and Francisco MartÃn Pinzón connect the Casa natal, Museo MartÃn Alonso Pinzón with the Pinzón family. The house was built in the mid-15th century and was the birthplace of the three brothers named above.
Port and historic houses
The pottery workshop at the Puerto Histórico de Palos had twelve kilns. The excavated workshop is considered the most complete and best-preserved pottery workshop in Europe from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its classification within these two centuries is just as much part of its historical description as the number of kilns.
The Casa natal, Museo MartÃn Alonso Pinzón was the birthplace of MartÃn Alonso, Vicente Yáñez and Francisco MartÃn Pinzón. The house was built in the mid-15th century.
The Casa natal, Museo MartÃn Alonso Pinzón is currently used for the study, preservation and permanent exhibition of documents, bibliographic materials and objects relating to the history of the Pinzón family and Palos de la Frontera in connection with the discovery of America. Thus, the house's current function includes research and preservation as well as the permanent presentation of written and material collections.
La Fontanilla is located on an ancient Roman well rim. A Mudéjar shrine, or tetrapylon, built of bricks in the 13th century protects the well.
The selection of other local sites also includes La Rábida.
Nature and trails
The Paraje Natural Lagunas de Palos y Las Madres nature reserve covers 693 hectares. It is located in the municipalities of Palos de la Frontera and Moguer in the province of Huelva. The stated area therefore refers to a territory that extends beyond the municipal boundary of Palos de la Frontera to include Moguer as well.
The Parque Botánico José Celestino Mutis covers 12 hectares. Footpaths cross the grounds and lead to a circuit around the perimeter as well as an inner route. The Parque Botánico José Celestino Mutis is dedicated to presenting Spanish and Ibero-American flora. The two routes provide access to grounds whose botanical focus is on these two floristic regions.
The official tourism portal also lists an area with guided tours and planned routes via the Wikiloc mobile application.
